(C) Churchill, Manitoba [ Taken Near: 11-15-1997 ]

This photo is a view of the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada, taken from near the western shore of Hudson Bay. The homes here are specially constructed. Each home is placed on pilings, which are driven deep into the ground, into the permafrost. This allows the homes to remain stable throught the summers and winters, as the ice melts, turning the ground into mud and frozen slush. Wind blowing under the homes created objectionable noise, and so "skirts" are placed around the bases to keep the wind from blowing around under them. Churchill is also home to Canada's only arctic seaport.
